“ Australian businesses offered bonus tax deductions on Techs and training ”

Change is inevitable, and in the past few years, it is even more consistent. The outbreak has had a profound impact on how we live and work, prompting businesses to respond rapidly. Many companies that put technology breakthroughs first not only survived but thrived.

By providing more tax incentives, the government budget for 2022-2023 emphasizes the significance of continuing to invest in technology. A total of $1.6 billion in tax money will be spent to encourage technological investment. The Small Business Technology Investment Boost and Small Business Skills and Training Boost programs will be open to small enterprises with yearly revenues of less than $50 million.

The boost is an opportunity for businesses to become more productive, according to Treasurer Frydenberg, and a reward for those that embrace the digital revolution. According to data, businesses with advanced levels of digitization are 50% more likely to increase revenue, eight times more likely to generate jobs, and seven times more likely to scale.

So, what is the Technology Investment Boost, tax-deductible expenses in Australia, and how can you use it to your advantage?

What is the Technology Investment Boost?

Businesses can claim an extra 20% deduction for expenses and depreciating assets under the Technology Investment Boost. They will be allowed to deduct 120% of the charges from their budget. In practice, this means that incurred costs can be deducted from taxable income at a higher rate than they were actually spent at the tax time.

Businesses with an annual turnover of less than $50 million can take advantage of tax breaks for new technology purchases.

According to the budget documents, the 20% tax deduction for digital skills training applies to external courses for employees.

This means that in-house training costs are not included when you claim the technology investment boost.

It also implies that sole traders who improve their digital skills through external training will not be eligible for the supplementary 20% tax deduction.

Importantly, all programs require legislation to take effect, which means bonus deductions are not guaranteed.

“These measures are not yet law,” the ATO warned, casting a large question mark over both initiatives ahead of the election.

This explains why qualifying spending did before June 30, 2022, will only be eligible for the 20% bonus deduction in the fiscal years 2022-2023.

Both policies went into effect as Frydenberg began his budget statement.

According to government budget documents, all applicable spending can be claimed under the new programs starting at 7.30 p.m. AEDT on Tuesday, March 29.

However, the policies have different expiration dates. The training package is available through June 30, 2024, while the technology package is available until June 30, 2023.

To obtain the bonus on purchases made between Tuesday night; and the end of the fiscal year 2021-2022, small businesses must first submit a routine expenditure claim.

According to ATO, the 20% incentive will only be implemented in fiscal years 2022-2023.
